NFPC-commissioned priests study underway
The NFPC has commissioned the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) to conduct research on the needs, interests, beliefs and practices of priests in the United States today. Building on the work published in 2003 as Evolving Visions of the Priesthood: Changes from Vatican II to the Turn of the New Century by Dean Hoge (d. 2008) and Jacqueline Wenger, this study is the fourth in a series of studies on priestly life and ministry that began in the 1970s. CARA is surveying a national sample of diocesan and religious priests and will conduct focus groups and interviews with selected priests. The study will culminate in a book that will highlight the trends in priestly life and ministry over the past 40 years as well as explore emerging issues such as the effect on priests of the shortage of clergy, pastoring multiple parishes, international priests, parish life coordinators, increasing lay involvement in parish life and the clergy sexual abuse crisis. Funding for the study has been secured from an anonymous donor.
For further information call Sister Mary Bendyna, RSM at CARA: (202) 687-0839. E-mail: bendynam@georgetown.edu.
