Summary of Catholic Leadership 360 Assessment

The National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management together with the National Federation of Priests' Councils and the National Association of Church Personnel Administrators have been engaged in a performance development and evaluation project called Catholic Leadership 360 Assessment. The three organizations believe that the ongoing development of lay leaders and priests is a central element of Pastoral Ministry. The project collaborating agency was the Center for Creative Leadership, a worldwide leadership and education group with three US campuses. The main objective of this project is to enhance performance development for both ordained and lay leaders across the country.

At the recent meeting of the NFPC Council of Consultors, project director, Michael Brough, provided an exciting update on developments and the Council and Board are keen to make Catholic Leadership 360 available to dioceses across the country.  Two dioceses participated in the initial implementation of the project: Metuchen (NJ) and Pittsburgh (PA).  A cohort of recently ordained priests in the Archdiocese of Boston is also preparing to use the program.

The 360 Assessments provide feedback on leadership competencies and behaviors deemed important for success in the roles of lay leader or priests. The leadership competencies included in the 360 tools focus on the areas of Communication, Leading Others, Relationships, Planning and Personal Management. The term 360 is used because the instruments are designed to collect feedback from a multitude of people referred to as raters. The data is summarized and provided to the participant in a comprehensive report.  Each participant engages in a confidential, one-on-one feedback session with a certified facilitator to review and interpret their feedback report and to create an individual development plan for continued growth.  It is also possible for leadership teams or cohorts of participants to have a group report for ongoing formation purposes.

An existing resource used in the development of the Priest model was the document In Fulfillment of Their Mission - The Duties and Tasks of a Roman Catholic Priest: An Assessment Project (NCEA, 2008). For the Lay Leader Model, two existing resources were used, National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers (NALM, 2003) and Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord (USCCB, 2005).  Both tools are customized for Catholic leaders and resources are provided to dioceses and Catholic organizations to support ongoing personal development.
