"Priests are, first of all, human beings whose very humanity ought to be a bridge for communicating Jesus Christ to the world today. Their humanity reflects a complex make-up, the different dimensions of what it means to be human. Each dimension needs recognition and attention."

The Basic Plan for the Ongoing Formation of Priests

"Ongoing formation involves relatively new content and especially methods; it develops as a harmonious and vital process which rooted in the formation received in the seminary calls for adaptations, updating and modifications, but without sharps breaks in continuity."

NFPC Council Development Program

The Council Development workshop focuses on the mission and the ministry of diocesan presbyteral councils. Participants discuss how council members work together with their bishop, their fellow priests and each other. It includes a brief history of presbyteral councils and examines the practical principles of an effective council and the functions and attributes of a good team. The program utilizes small groups and self-assessment tools based on the principles in the NFPC resources Unity Among Us and Priests in Council.
The program seeks to:
- Strengthen the bonds between priests and bishops through their presbyteral councils,
- Address an inadequate understanding of the theological and canonical foundations of presbyteral councils
- Provide the training necessary for bishops and priests to more adequately function as a presbyteral council.
Council Development benefits all priests of a diocese not just those currently on the council. It can also provide a model for how other diocesan councils can work together for the good of the church.
Recommended length: 1 Day
